about

I built a sample-based instrument out of an old toy metallophon, essentially a children's xylophone or glockenspiel, from Germany that my wife had when she was a kid living there in the 1970s. The idea was to make a single instrument that could kind of do everything - drones and pads, plucky bell hits, percussion/beats and effects. These se are a few tracks I threw together to show what it can do.

"Waking On The Train To Aomori" was made entirely with the metallophon.

"Hana Sends For Help" is all-metallophon except for the muted piano (which is another instrument I'm working on). Everything else - the pads, distorted riser, bell-like synths and percussion - was made solely with the metallophon.

"Chasing Butterflies With Astrid" is a contextual piece to show how the metallophon plays with other instruments. The only thing in it from the metallophon is the bell hits and reverse hits.

If you'd like to download a free copy of the metallophon instrument (you need the full version of Kontakt 7), you can get it at Pianobook: www.pianobook.co.uk/packs/metallophon/
